This made it the fastest growing smartphone, ahead of the second placed Black Berry from Research In Motion at 46.2 per cent.

While Nokia had the highest actual shipments (67.7 million units) and the largest market share of 38.9 per cent, its growth rate was relatively slow at 11.9 per cent.

But Nokia’s strategy will take long to bear fruits in Africa and Asian economies where entry-level mobiles still dominate as smartphone prices remain prohibitive for most consumers.

The firm is however ahead of other contenders for the smartphone market in Kenya and African market as a result of its wider price and product range.
